On Being Easily Swayed…

O

During the winter ‘break’ – six days really – I stayed at home with my family. On one of those days my sister decided to watch the last of the LOTR Trilogy. You know the one, the one with all the battles, the carnage, the massive military offensives…

Halfway through watching one of those battles, I couldn’t take it any longer. I had to play an RTS. Just had to. Shudder in horror if you must, but I needed to do more than passively watch a battle. I wanted to direct one. Build the units. Out-think my opponents. Recoil in horror as the enemy punched hole after hole through my defences… Soon after making the decision, I was comfortably ensconced in my chair directing the Lunar Corporation in a melee in Earth 2150.

Nice as Earth 2150 is, nothing can compare with the greatness that is the C&C series of RTS. Command & Conquer. Red Alert. Those were the ultimate RTS games. None of the fantasy world of Warcraft for me – I wanted to see heavy armor and lots of it. Tanks, helos, fighters… Ahem.

So I think I’ll be getting my grubby little hands on C&C: Generals sometime. I need my C&C fix.

Which brings me to today, when I was [calmly] reading my HIST 100 textbook on European history. Soon, I’d gone far beyond the required readings and wiled away an entire 1.5 hours on one of the most dynamic periods of our history.

And that’s when I started feeling a tingle in the back of my head…
A memory long forgotten…
Long nights without sleep; staying up with a single purpose…
Spent playing one game…

Civilization II

And you know, Civilization IV is out, and from all reviews it’s a blockbuster…
