Calculators in Waterloo

I hope the following information is useful for anyone who’s planning on joining Waterloo Engineering (especially Comp – cause I’m a CompE and what I’m saying will have the most relevance re the courses I know).

Parrot and More

So yesterday as I lounged across the web I came upon Parrot – a VM for the yet to be released (and slow developing) Perl 6. What’s interesting is that they are interested in having other languages (for example Python, Tcl, PHP etc) use that as their own VM base. Sort of like .NET. You can create classes etc in one language and call them in another. I’m extremely interested to see if they can pull it off. If they do, that would be an extremely important win for the OSS community (IMO).

Omigosh…Dashboard!

So on Friday I took a little hike (ok, more like an extended trip) to gnomedesktop.org. Ahh…my favorite source for GNOME information. What do I find there but…the GNOME Summary. I enjoy reading the GNOME summaries – they often give me a whole lot of information I would not have found out otherwise. At any rate, the first item was a little blurb about a neat tool Nat Freidman (of Ximian fame) was developing. I’d seen a screenshot of Dashboard but I remember having absolutely _no clue_ about what it was. Kinda like a “cool…but so what” feeling.
